Ethan's unknown illness or Ethan's lupus scare, refers to an ongoing undiagnosed medical ailment experienced by Ethan Klein. Since June 2023, Ethan has been going to numerous doctors attempting to figure out why certain markers for autoimmune disorders are flagged in his bloodwork.[1] In the early days of attempting to solve this issue, Ethan hypothesized that it might be lupus, a chronic autoimmune disorder.

Lupus[]

Description[]

Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), or lupus for short, is a chronic autoimmune disease where the immune system attacks healthy tissues throughout the body. This can cause inflammation and damage to various organs, including the skin, joints, kidneys, heart, lungs, blood vessels, and brain. The exact cause of lupus is not fully understood, but it's believed to involve a combination of genetic, environmental, and hormonal factors.[2]

Symptoms can vary widely among individuals and may include fatigue, joint pain and swelling, skin rashes (often in a butterfly shape across the cheeks and nose), fever, chest pain, hair loss, sensitivity to light, and more.[3] Lupus is often difficult to diagnose because its symptoms often mimic those of other diseases, and they can come and go over time.[4]

Lupus can vary greatly in severity from person to person. For some individuals, it may cause relatively mild symptoms that can be managed with medication and lifestyle changes. However, for others, lupus can be more severe and significantly impact their quality of life. While lupus itself is not typically considered fatal, complications from the disease can be life-threatening. The mortality rate from lupus is roughly 10-15%.[5]
